PURPOSE - The Yoga Teacher
Training is designed to give
you an intensive experience of what yoga can do for your life.
Before the course starts you should read the Food Revolution by John Robbins (Please click HERE, read John Robbins' Credo and watch his short video). (If you get involved near the beginning of the course, we can give you an extension on this reading.) After you have read this book, contact Bharata and arrange for an oral examination on this book. This is necessary before you the end of the first week of the course. Another book, Yoga Mind and Body written by the Sivananda Yoga Centers should be read and studied before the course begins. Any time during the week before the course starts and the first week arrange an oral examination with Bharata. At this time the you must answer questions satisfactorily demonstrating that you have read and have a basic understanding of these books. We also require that you memorize the twelve basic postures (in their correct order) and a simple explanation of how to teach each posture. This should be done before the course begins. Having this knowledge at your finger tips will make your early teaching efforts much easier. Sometimes people think they can figure out the class when they start teaching. We want more than this. We want you to memorize the class so everything just slips off your tongue. The reason for this is that we want to the basic words to be second nature to you. If you are fumbling for words when you are teaching, you can't give the students the attention they deserve. Put a lot of energy into this memorization. Once you have the basic class down it will be much easier to bring in variations and other details. EXAM NOTE: Sometimes people learn of this course just before it begins and don't have enough time for the required reading or memorization. If this is your case, please contact Bharata for an extension.
In
order to keep the consistency of the teaching, students
should attend yoga classes
only at Yoga & Inner Peace during the duration of the course. Please don not attend yoga
classes in any other place during this time. We are teaching a traditional style of
yoga, not an eclectic, mixed American style of yoga.
There
are obviously unavoidable times when one might have to be out of town during the
course. If you know before the course
starts that you have to be out of town during the course, discuss this with
Bharata long before the course begins. Some
arrangements will be made for you
to make up part of the requirements prior to the beginning of the course.
If situations arise that you have to
be away and are unable to fulfill the requirements, we will often ask you to take
the course at a different time or to make up the requirements after the course
ends.
As previously mentioned, we are teaching a traditional or classical form of yoga.
Consequently, we also include very traditional discipline.
We understand very well that these course requirements are not for
everyone.
Difficulties
will be handled on a case-by-case basis. COURSE STRUCTURE – The Yoga Teachers Training is comprised of the following parts: Yoga Classes – Students are required to attend at least seven yoga classes each week. This helps to establish habits more firmly and , obviously, gives many more benefits. Students also must attend each Sunday morning seven forty-five pranayama (breathing exercise) class and nine o’clock advanced yoga class. It is strongly suggested that you attend at least one of Bharata's classes each week. If you cannot, please discuss this with him.
Meditations - Students must attend meditation
each day
including Saturday. The reason for this
is that if one goes to meditation regularly for ten weeks, the habit of practicing
daily meditation is much more firmly entrenched in one’s consciousness and one
is more likely to continue the habit. Sundays - Sundays are our big days during the training. Attendance is required at both the 7:45 Breathing Class and the 9 AM Advanced Class. You must also attend the 5:45 PM meditation and the pot-luck vegetarian dinner after meditation. The dinner is an excellent time to try (and also prepare) a variety of tasty vegetarian dishes.
Intensive Seminars - Seminars are held Tuesdays & Thursdays evenings from 7 to 10 PM. Many
seminars last
three
hours, but some are shorter. Students
are required to attend all seminars. Anatomy and Physiology - In addition to homework, we include 10 hours of yoga anatomy and physiology. These will be held on either Tuesday or Thursdays evenings. Times will be arranged specifically for each course.
Home Work Assignments - A one-page
summary of each seminar should be turned in at the following seminar. This
summary should demonstrate that the students understand the concepts explained
in the previous seminar.
Teaching Assistance – Starting the first week, each student must assist in at least three Meditation Seminars - Students are required to attend the three-week (Tuesdays 7-8:30 pm) meditation seminars. CPR & AED - This will be held on a Saturday afternoon during the course. We are charging students what the Red Cross is charging us, $38. If you have a current CPR, you do not have to take this course. CPR Reading Assignments – During the course of the Intensive each student is required to read The Complete Illustrated Book of Yoga by Swami Vishnu Devananda, Yoga Mind & Body and the Sivananda Companion to Meditation by the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers. Oral exams should be arranged and completed before the end of the second to last week of the course. It is recommended that these readings be done as early in the course as possible. A general understanding of these books is necessary for the final examination. Practice Teaching – The seminars later in the course will deal with practice teaching. The students will have an opportunity to practice what they have learned.
Examinations –
In addition to the oral exams
(basic class and four books), a
comprehensive essay examination will be given at the end of the course.
This essay will cover both the course work and material in the three yoga
books.
Certification -
A certificate will be issue upon completion of the course.
In addition to passing the examination, all of the above requirements
must be fulfilled in order to receive a certificate.
LIFE STYLE
Normally, a yoga teachers training program is taught in an ashram, a yoga monastery where students live during the entire course and in which the environment is closely controlled in order to give the students the proper experience. Because the students in this intensive are remaining “in the world”, we ask them to follow these guidelines in order for them to obtain the optimum benefit from their experience. PLEASE, if you cannot follow these guidelines, do not enroll in this course. If you don't follow the guidelines and do take the course, you will affect the energy of what everyone else is doing. You will not only be not contributing to the positive, uplifting group energy, but will be draining the energy from the class. If you have any questions about this, please speak with Bharata. This course is not a diploma mill or just a way to get certified as a yoga teacher. It's about learning and experiencing the yoga life. Give yourself a chance on this one. Vegetarianism – Intensive students are required to consume a strict yogic vegetarian diet for the period of the course. This means no meat, fish, eggs, alcohol, coffee (or soft drinks with caffeine) , tobacco or non-medical drugs. No exceptions. This diet is designed to give you the calmest, most peaceful mind. In order for students to experience variety in vegetarian cuisine and to see a different (from the classroom) perspective, students are required to attend all Sunday evening pot-luck vegetarian dinners. Quiet, Non-stimulating Environment – We want you to create an extremely quiet environment for yourself during this course. We ask you not to watch or listen to radio, TV or music (other than yogic spiritual music - any doubt about this ask Bharata) during the duration of this course. Avoid noisy, stimulating places. Try to keep quiet company. Allow the mind to enjoy peace and quiet for 10 weeks. Read inspiring, spiritual books. You will be amazed at how this affects your consciousness. We understand that work environments are sometimes way out of this category and that you cannot avoid these things at work.
Service – Even with this busy Intensive schedule try to consciously include
service to others in your daily routine. Karma
yoga (selfless service) is the foundation of all yoga practices. Clothing -Intensive students are required to wear a yellow Yoga & Inner Peace t-shirt (available at the center) and long (full length - no capris), white, loose (non-stretch - baggy) pants to ALL activities attended at Yoga & Inner Peace. This includes meditations, yoga classes, seminars, special programs and graduation. You can find white pants at uniform stores like Copy's Uniform in the plaza on the northwest corner of Congress and 6th Ave. South.
Some Tips - This course is really about letting go - letting go of all of the things we distract our minds with and trying to find peace of mind inside. Most people seem to live max-ed out lives. They don't have room for much else. When you take this course, you must let go of some things. If you don't, the course will gobble you up. If you go with the basic flow of the course, you will attain immense benefits. You will really feel inner peace and quiet. One of the things that many people tend to do is to stay up late and cram more things into their lives. As best as you can, let go. Try to get to bed by ten, even earlier. If you have the opportunity to nap during the day, don't. You will find that if you don't nap, after a few days you will get sleepy earlier and go to bed earlier. With a little adjustment, your cycle will adjust to the early rising and you will get to bed in the evenings early enough to get enough sleep. Renewal / Reunion - We ask the graduates from the previous course to attend the first week of the next course. (Obviously, this doesn't apply to people who have come from a very long way to take the course.) We ask this for several reasons:
1. People often slack off on their personal discipline after the course has finished. They definitely feel a shift in consciousness, want to get back to where they were at the end of the course, but often lack the self-discipline to plug it back into their lives 2. It's definitely a chance to re-connect with fellow students, with whom many have become good friends. 3. It is extremely beneficial to the new group of teacher trainees. It helps to start the course off on a higher energy.
